Let's see what you need to know about GPS

What is GPS?
The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite-based navigation system made up of a network of 24 satellites placed into orbit by the U.S. Department of Defense. GPS was originally intended for military applications, but in the 1980s, the government made the system available for civilian use. GPS works in any weather conditions,
anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day. There are no subscription fees or setup charges to use GPS.

Why can't my GPS device determine my current position?
For a GPS receiver to calculate one's longitude and latitude (considered a 2D 'fix'), the receiver has to be able to receive confirmed data from at least three satellites. Some conditions may interfere with receiving this data.
A. In a city, tall buildings may block one's view of satellites.
B. When driving through a tunnel, or when standing indoors, the structure overhead may block or reduce strength of received signals.
C. Some cars use a type of heat-insulating film on the windows which may also affect reception of satellite signals.

Can my Mio GPS device receive satellite signals indoors?
Yes¡Kand No. Satellite signals can penetrate some building materials though with lower signal strength than through open air. In some buildings it is possible to get a strong 3D satellite signal lock, though it may take longer than when outdoors.

What kinds of information that the GPS receiver can provide for us ?
After GPS receiver receives the signals, it could provide latitude*/longitude*, height*, speed* and direction*, and determine the user£¾s position* on the map.

What is TMC, and why do I want it?
TMC stands for Traffic Message Channel, and is an FM Radio broadcast of real-time traffic information. Data messages are received silently and decoded by a TMC receiver buit into the navigation system or external cradle. Several Mio DigiWalker navigation devices support traffic and can re-route you around the traffic incidents.

What is TTS?
TTS stands for Text-to-speech which will say the names of the streets or exits you need to take. For example, with TTS OFF you would hear ¡§In 300 yards turn left¡¨, while with TTS ON you would hear ¡§In 300 yards turn left on 1st Street. The TTS voice in Mio device is named Samantha, and is the default voice.

How can I locate a lost or stolen Mio GPS?
Although the device can track its position, it does not transmit that location. It cannot be located by an outside source, such as the Police, LowJack or by Mio Technology.

What is POI?
POI stands for point of interest. These are yellow pages listings for categories such as restaurants, hotels, gas stations, etc. Millions of POIs are preinstalled in the Mio device.

What is a map update?
A map update usually includes the latest maps available for your device, as well as some minor software improvements. For some areas where coverage was already near complete [ ex: most US metro areas] the main improvements will be re-verified map data and refreshed points of interest. In other areas where there was a lot of growth in the past 1-3 years [ex: Las Vegas, Phoenix, etc.] or where coverage was less than complete [ex: parts of some Canada provinces] map updates will show a lot of new streets and you¡¦ll be able to navigate to new addresses or new points of interest.
